THE Government’s employment and training agency, FÁS, is providing more than 11,200 training and employment scheme places in Cork this year as part of an action plan on joblessness, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.
FÁS has created 7,011 training places in the city and county while 4,267 places have been created in various employment schemes run by the agency. The Community Employment Scheme accounts for 2,118 places while 220 more are available under the Work Placement Programme.

David Stanton
THE number of people in east Cork on the live register has now risen to 6,594. This is an increase of 10 per cent since this time last year says Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton, when the figure stood at 6,007.
“The number of people out of work in Midleton, Cobh and Youghal is still increasing, and increasing on a monthly basis. It is alarming that despite large job losses in 2009, the number of people unemployed in east Cork has increased by a further 587 people since July 2009.

WEST Cork Sinn Féin has organised a protest outside the constituency office of Cork South West Fianna Fáil Deputy Christy O’Sullivan at McCurtain Hill this evening Friday 6th August.
Clonakilty Sinn Féin councillor Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin said, “We are not sure how many young people have emigrated since the recession started, and this is probably another conveniently forgotten statistic for the Fianna Fáil led government of which Christy O’ Sullivan is a member.

DEPUTY Deirdre Clune has stated that the Government’s refusal to listen is driving up Ireland’s unemployment rate and claims that small changes could make a big difference to the country’s overall recovery

Dole queue in Cork
IRELAND’S massive unemployment levels which are running at more than three per cent above the EU average are a national disaster according to the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen.
Deputy Allen said that Ireland’s unemployment rate which increased again in March to 275,000 according official figures must be tackled as a matter of urgency.
