THE Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has said a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum on the Stability Treaty will help secure the future of Irish farming and maintain our strong relationship with Europe in the lead up to CAP negotiations.

Deputy Martin and Fianna Fáil’s Agriculture Spokesperson Michael Moynihan TD joined the IFA President John Bryan at Bandon Mart in Co Cork today to campaign for a Yes vote on May 31st.

THE Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has repeated his invitation to the Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams for a head to head debate on the Stability Treaty.

Deputy Martin commented, “It is quite clear that Gerry Adams is not serious about debating the real issues in this Treaty directly with the Yes side.  After refusing my invitation for a head to head debate last weekend, Deputy Adams issued an invitation to the Taoiseach that he knew was unlikely to be accepted.

He made the offer following the Sinn Féin deputy’s refusal to participate in the recent TV3 Stability Treaty debate and his virtual absence from the campaign to date.

Senator “dismayed at level of cynicism” shown by Sinn Féin

TODAY at the Committee discussing the Stability Treaty, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams was challenged to explain how a leaflet being distributed to every home in the country was misusing quotes by three of the country’s most eminent economists in making an argument against the treaty.

Senator John Gilroy, Seanad Spokesperson on Finance for the Labour Party, expressed dismay at the level of cynicism being displayed by Sinn Féin.

SPEAKING in the Dáil, Fine Gael Cork South West Deputy, Noel Harrington, has said a more appropriate name for the Stability Treaty would be the Reality Treaty as, quite simply, its ratification will force future governments to adopt a sensible approach to spending.

“This Treaty sets out a framework of how we should plan our financial affairs as a nation, a member of the European Community and as members of a common currency.  In adopting this Treaty we will, in essence, be writing the rules by which we will frame our monetary affairs, now and in the future.
