Deputy McCarthy says: “I am extremely pleased that the people of West Cork have voted Yes to the Stability Treaty after a prolonged but robust campaign. Along with the rest of the county, the people of West Cork have sent a confident message to Europe that Ireland is open for business, serious about recovery and worthy of investment.
WITH the final constituency declared, Ireland has voted in favour of the Lisbon Treaty by a margin of 67.1% to 32.9%
Cork South West proved to be the point of no return, when it declared yes it became mathematically impossible for the no side to prevail.
Only the two Donegal constituencies voted no, both by very narrow margins. Across the nation however the yes vote prevailed by a margin of more than two to one.
Here is today’s statement in full from Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
I am very pleased to be able to say to you that the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty will be carried decisively.
Today the Irish people have spoken with a clear and resounding voice. This is a good day for Ireland and a good day for Europe.
