Legislation needed to ensure jobless are employed at election time

Fine Gael Cork North Central Deputy, Dara Murphy TD, has today (Friday) called for legislation to be prioritised to ensure that opportunities to work at polling and count stations are given to the unemployed during election time.

“The Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, has, in the past, encouraged Local Returning Officers to consider employing the unemployed at polling stations and count centres at election and referendum time. I believe, however, that there is a need to go further by legislating to ensure that Returning Officers are making a genuine effort to do just that.

O’Keeffe stumped over schools closures

3597342619_d8ba477ac0_oEDUCATION Minister, Batt O’Keeffe is taking flack from Fine Gael’s Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes following a parliamentary question which revealed the Cork minister did not know how many schools had to be closed to facilitate the recent local and European elections.

According to Deputy Hayes, “It is crazy that the Minister responsible for schools doesn’t know how many schools were closed for the elections.

“Schools across the country were used as polling stations for the local and European elections.
