Disappointed at Job Losses

Seán Sherlock T.D., Minister for Research and Innovation, today [Wednesday] said he was very disappointed at today’s announcement of job losses at the at the Pfizer manufacturing facilities in Little Island and Ringaskiddy, Cork.

Minister Sherlock said: ‘Today’s announcement will come as a severe blow to the workers and their families. The focus now is to ensure maximum support and assistance for those workers affected by this announcement.

FINE Gael Cork South Central Senator, Deirdre Clune, has said the issue of drugs coming off patent is a challenge that has been faced by the pharmaceutical industry for years, but that this fact will do little to soften the blow for the workers affected by the job losses announced at Pfizer today (Wednesday). “The pharmaceutical sector is one that is constantly changing and this issue of drugs coming off patent is one that has been knocking around for a long time, presenting challenges for the industry globally. Nonetheless, these job losses will come as good news to no-one.

Job losses at Pfizer regrettable

FINE Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has this afternoon (Wednesday) said that the job losses announced at Pfizer in Cork are regrettable and that challenges lie ahead for the pharmaceutical industry in dealing with drugs coming off patent.

“My sympathies lie with the workers who will be losing their jobs as a result of what is happening in the pharmaceutical sector. While the details of what lies ahead for workers are still being worked out, it is my firm hope that the majority of jobs losses will be of a voluntary nature.

Pfizer job losses are a devastating blow for Cork

FIANNA Fáil has expressed concern at 177 job losses at Pfizer in Cork.

Party Leader Micheál Martin said: “Pfizer is a major employer in Cork and these job losses are a devastating blow.  Pfizer’s operations at Little Island and Ringaskiddy have been of huge benefit to the local economy and its growing presence over many years has been a strong statement of confidence in Ireland.  Pfizer is one of the most successful FDI companies in Ireland and I think it is important to point out that these redundancies are the result of global factors and sales, and not failings on the part of the Cork operations or its workers.” [Read more...]

McGrath welcomes completion of sale of Shanbally Pfizer plant to BioMarin Pharmaceutical

LOCAL Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath has welcomed the sale of the Pfizer manufacturing facility at Shanbally, Cork to BioMarin but has again expressed his regret that there will be 65 job losses later in the year as the plant closes.

Deputy McGrath said, “Today’s announcement that the sale has been completed of the Pfizer plant in Shanbally to BioMarin is very welcome as new investment is planned on the site and over 100 high quality jobs will be created in the coming years.

Martin urges Government action on impending job losses at Pfizer Shanbally facility

FIANNA Fáil Leader and Cork South Central TD Micheál Martin has called on the Government to ensure there is full engagement by State agencies with Pfizer and its employees at its Shanbally manufacturing facility which is due to close in September.

Pfizer has announced that an agreement has been reached with BioMarin Pharmaceutical to purchase the plant.

Deputy Martin said, “The closure of Pfizer’s manufacturing facility at Shanbally in September will be a significant blow to the community and will affect its 65 workers and their families.

BioMarin to acquire Pfizer’s manufacturing facility in Cork

THE Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton has welcomed the announcement that BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. has reached agreement with Pfizer to acquire its manufacturing facility in Shanbally, Cork.

BioMarin, a California headquartered company, plans to create over 100 high quality jobs in the next 5 years with the support of Government through IDA Ireland.

The company is investing $48.5 million to purchase the Shanbally plant, a 133,000 sq. ft bulk biologics manufacturing facility.

Government has no job creation policy

FINE Gael Innovation and Research Spokesperson Deirdre Clune TD has expressed her disappointment at the announcement of 55 job losses at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in Cork together with changes to shift patterns which will result in 66 fewer jobs.

The Cork TD criticised the Government for the lack of any credible job creation policy and its inability to improve Irish competitiveness.
