FINE Gael Cork South Central TD and Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the decision of Laya to cover the PET/CT scanner at CUH.

“I welcome the decision by Laya Healthcare to facilitate its customers using the PET scanner at CUH.  This decision will enable Laya customers in Cork to have access to the same facilities that are available in Dublin, Galway and Waterford without having to travel vast distances.  This decision means that its Cork customers can now use the new scanner on an out-patient basis.

Slow Progress with CUH PET Scanner

DAVID Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East continues to be concerned about the slow progress being made with the PET/CT Scanner unit at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The PET/CT scanner unit, constructed in 2009, for a cost of €6.85 million, is still not operational.

“I am very concerned that the PET/CT Scanner is still not up and running which is why I raised the matter in the Dail last week.

A PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanner worth €3.8 million and purchased in 2009 by Cork University Hospital (CUH) will soon be operational Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has discovered.  Deputy Stanton was given this information during a special Dáil debate he secured on the matter this evening.

“It is quite unbelievable that this brand new PET scanner, crucial to for the detection of cancer, has lain idle for so long.  I am delighted that the HSE finally approved funding for CUH to employ a consultant radiologist and other support staff so the machine can be used.  This PET scanner is just one of the two public PET scanners in the country; the other scanner is located in St James’ Hospital in Dublin.
