FINE Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has today (Friday) welcomed the publication of the new Personal Insolvency Bill 2012, which will fundamentally reform insolvency laws in Ireland and provide a lifeline for those who are struggling with unsustainable debts.

“Today’s publication of the Personal Insolvency Bill is an essential part of a series of measures that will tackle the problem of personal and mortgage debt.
“The Labour Party’s line on this devastating economic problem has been consistent and clear. In the run up to the General Election, and during the negotiations for the Programme for Government, Labour has highlighted proposals to deal with the mortgage debt issue. FINE Gael Cork North Central Senator, Colm Burke, has said the Personal Insolvency Bill published this week will give a vital lifeline to distressed mortgage holders and those overwhelmed by personal debts. The Heads of the Bill was published by Ministers Alan Shatter and Michael Noonan this week, and it is hoped it can be published in its legislative form by the end of April.
“The key element of this proposed new legislation is that it will allow people to remain in their own homes while getting on top of their financial affairs. People right across Cork North Central have been desperately in need of for some form of help to allow them to get on top of a growing mountain of debt that for many average homeowners has gotten out of control.
FINE Gael Cork South Central TD, Jerry Buttimer, has said that the Personal Insolvency Bill published this week by Ministers Alan Shatter and Michael Noonan is a key step in solving our mortgage debt crisis.
“This draft Bill puts forward a range of options that will provide much needed relief for those struggling with personal debt. The challenge of getting to grips with the mortgage problem is one of the biggest issues facing this Government. We now have a series of solutions, which will form a key part of the Government’s strategy for dealing with mortgage arrears. People who are unable to meet their mortgage repayments or who are struggling to deal with personal debt will be directly helped by these measures.
