FINE Gael Cork North Central Deputy, Dara Murphy, has written to AIB and Permanent TSB following an announcement by both banks that they are to close their Mayfield branch, calling for the decision to be reviewed.

“Rationalisation of branch networks is part and parcel of cost saving measures which are being embarked on by all banks these days as part of radical restructuring programmes. However, it appears that in some instances, decisions are being made in complete isolation, with no consideration being given to the broader picture.

FIANNA Fáil Finance Spokesperson Michael McGrath has called on the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan to proactively engage with management at Permanent TSB to bring its interest rates into line with market rates.

Deputy McGrath said, “Despite their recent interest rate reduction, state-owned Permanent TSB is still charging a Standard Variable Rate of 5.19 per cent – that’s over 2 per cent higher than another state-owned bank AIB (3.04 per cent).

Earlier today the bank announced plans to raise its variable interest rates by 0.5 per cent in a move that will impact on 50,000 borrowers.
