SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry has said that city councillors should refuse to pass a new council-inspired action plan for the Blackpool village area until “such time as the council’s planning department is prepared to outline a hard hitting plan of campaign to tackle dereliction in the historic village”.
Cork City Council will be asked to pass the Blackpool Village Area Action Plan next Monday, Sept 13, at the first meeting of the council since the summer recess.

NO To Bin Service Privatisation is the title of two public meetings to be hosted in Glanmire and Blarney by Socialist Party councillor Mick Barry this week.
The first will be held in Glanmire Community Hall tonight (Monday) at 7.30pm and the other will be held in the Muskerry Arms, Blarney, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 8pm.
The meetings come in the wake of Cork County Council’s decision to privatise waste collection services.

FIANNA Fáil TD Frank Fahy has called on Minister Batt O’Keeffe to cut the National Employment Rights Agency’s budget and to amalgamate the agency with other regulatory agencies in the near future but his appeal has been slammed by Socialist Party councillor Mick Barry.
Deputy Fahy said that he had been approached by business people concerned about an, “unnecessarily zealous approach being taken by some NERA officials in the enforcement of regulations” and called for the agency’s budget to be cut “in the light of financial constraints facing the Government departments now”.

SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry this morning slammed Cork County Council’s decision to privatise its waste collection service as news breaks of the service being sold to Country Clean Recycling.
Cllr Barry said that the decision to maintain the waiver scheme for two years was a “token sweetener” and that once the two years was up “thousands of low income families in the county area will simply be thrown to the wolves”.
Cllr Barry said, “This rotten deal means that thousands of low income families, people who are unemployed, people who are on disability, old age pensioners whose sole source of income is the state pension are going to be asked to pay hundreds of euro for bin collection where previously the cost was covered by society.

SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry this morning hit out at reports that motorists might be levied with a new tax on petrol and diesel in December’s Budget.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey announced at the weekend that he is considering proposals for a new tax which would incorporate motor taxes into a single “all-in charge”.
