THE question of whether Ireland’s neutral status will change under Lisbon has continued to niggle voters even after the government obtained a legal protocol to enshrine Ireland’s policy of military neutrality.
Campaigners for a ‘No’ vote are still painting scenarios of an increasingly militarised post-Lisbon Europe, with Ireland forced to draft its young people into European armies.
One of the reasons these fears continue to circulate is because Lisbon will involve changes to the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy. While taking these changes into account, it is necessary to remember that they do not interfere with Ireland’s sovereign neutrality.

A GROUP of 25 people from Cork city and county have held meetings with European Commission officials in Brussels regarding the ongoing threat to Fermoy Weir. The group traveled as guests with out-going MEP, Kathy Sinnot.
A meeting discussing the persistent threat to the natural aquifer supplying water to Watergrasshill, Glanmire, Midleton and Rathcormac also took place.

OUTGOING MEP for Ireland South, Kathy Sinnott has pledged that she will continue her support for carers despite failing to retain her seat at this week’s elections.
The Cork based MEP said that she will be continuing to work as a carer at home and will also keep working to support carers in Ireland.
“I have been a carer for over 30 years and understand the many challenges facing carers. I have worked on behalf of carers during my term in the Parliament, especially in founding and chairing the European Parliament Interest Group on Carers and Caring. One of the achievements of the Carers Group was getting carers included in the Workforce for Health.

WHILE this week’s elections no doubt brought much heartache to the European candidates who failed to secure seats in Brussels, some may take solace in the fact that the odds are already on that they will secure seats in the next Dáil.
Despite saying that he is not planning on contesting the upcoming General Elections, Paddy Power is offering odds of 2/1 on Colm Burke being elected to the next Dáil.
Just behind Colm is Kathy Sinnott at 3/1 and sitting Senator Dan Boyle at 5/1.
Assuming her father Martin stands down, Sinn Fein’s Toireasa Ferris is odds-on at 1/3.

Any student inspired by the recent local and European elections and thinking of becoming a politician would do well to observe the phenomenal success of Munster’s poll-topping MEP Brian Crowley.
The Fianna Fáil stalwart seemed untouched by the devastation that left Ireland’s most powerful party in tatters.
Mr Crowley is characteristically modest about his success, but after fifteen years as an MEP it seems there is no magic secret – it’s just hard work, and more hard work.
