Lord Mayor welcomes findings

LORD Mayor Cllr Michael O’Connell has broadly welcomed the reported findings of the cross-party Environment Committee of Dáil Éireann investigating the flooding crisis of 2009 and the response to the severe weather encountered in December 2009/January 2010.

peaking in response to the findings of the committee the Lord Mayor said, “I obviously endorse the call on Minister Gormley to set up an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Lee valley and Cork city floods on November 19-20. This was something I and many of my Council colleagues called for from the outset.

Lord Mayor to push Docklands project

Eastern_Gateway_BridgeCORK’S new Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael O’Connell has invited the city’s Oireachtas representatives to a special meeting in City Hall today as well as local party leaders, to impress on them the strategic importance of the Docklands project to the future development of the city and in particular the access bridges which form an integral part of the development.

Speaking in advance of the meeting the Lord Mayor said, “There have been many people who have said that in the current environment that the Dockland project cannot continue. We want to impress on the government through our local TDs that this project can and should continue and is vital to the region’s development and prosperity. The Eastern Gateway Bridge is vital to the success of this project.”

Lord Mayor urges city to capitalise on tourism ranking

2DSCF0021THE Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy has responded to the news that Cork has been named in the top 10 cities in the world to visit in 2010 by the influential Lonely Planet tour guide by urging further co-operation between organizations to capitalise on the tourism potential of the award.

Cork was placed third behind such prestigious company as Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Charleston USA and ahead of Istanbul, Lecce, Kyoto and Singapore.

Cyclists use pedal-power to promote Lisbon

Former Ireland rugby player Denis Hickie is the latest VIP to add his weight to the pro-Lisbon movement. The legendary winger turned out this week to wave off a bunch of intrepid amateur cyclists on a county-wide tour to drum up support for the treaty ahead of next month’s referendum.
