‘Butterfly Children’ should be included in long term illness scheme says senator

FINE  Gael Cork North Central Senator, Colm Burke, has called for epidermolysis bullosa to be included in the long term illness scheme. Children who suffer from this rare skin condition are often referred to as the ‘Butterfly Children’ due to the fragility of their skin. Senator Burke made his call during an adjournment debate in the Seanad.

“Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a devastating and debilitating genetic condition. EB patients suffer blisters and wounds to their skin even after very minor friction. In mild cases, the disease results in chronic pain and immobility. Severe forms of the condition lead to a life of constant pain. It affects just 1 in every 18,000 babies born.

Illness scheme not updated for 35 years

CORK East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has discovered that the HSE have failed to update the list of qualifying health conditions for the Long Term Illness Scheme since 1975. The Long Term Illness Scheme allows for the supply of medicines and medical equipment to persons suffering from certain illnesses free of charge.

“A number of constituents have recently been in contact with me regarding their failure to qualify for the Long Term Illness Scheme.  Despite suffering from long-term and often degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, Crohn’s disease or Alzheimer’s, from which they cannot recover, these people are excluded from the scheme.
