Local elections cost council €200,000

82911270gll0me9gcityhall1THE cost of holding the last local elections in Cork city amounted to more than €200,000 the City Manager has confirmed.

In a written reply to a question put by Fine Gael’s Cllr John Buttimer at tonight’s City Council meeting, Mr Gavin confirmed that the total cost to the Cork taxpayer of holding the elections amounted to €214,263.

THE votes have been tallied and the results are in.

Thirty-one new members were elected to Cork City Council yesterday and today. Three former Lords Mayor lost their seats in what was a tough election for Fianna Fáil while the major beneficiaries were independents and left of centre parties.

Voting centres close

VOTING centres for the local and European elections have closed within the past hour.

Early reports suggest that voter turnout was steady in most areas, but, slightly lower in others. The full extent of turnout will not be realised until tomorrow.

Counting of the votes for the local elections will commence after 9am tomorrow morning. The European and local election votes will first be separated and the city electoral area votes will be counted afterwards in City Hall with the county votes being counted at three centres; Parochial Hall, in West Cork and in Mallow.

ballotboxMORE than 380,000 eligible voters in Cork will be given the chance to decide who they want to represent them in local government and in Brussels today.

Polling stations for the local and European elections opened at 7am today and will remain open until 10pm this evening.

Reports have suggested that polling across Cork is slow but steady this morning.

FINE Gael local election candidate in the Cork North central ward, Cllr Patricia Gosch has urged the people of the north side to get out and vote to send a clear message to Fianna Fáil.

Cllr Gosch who is currently the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork said, “I would urge everybody to make their voices heard. During the campaign it has been made crystal clear to me just how dissatisfied people are with Fianna Fáil for getting us into this mess and then failing to deal with it properly.

“It may be a cliché but a true one that there are three issues in this election, jobs, jobs and jobs. Fine Gael is the only party that has produced a detailed and viable plan as to how we can get the economy moving again while Fianna Fáil continue to dither and are distracted by bailing out their rich friends.

WITH less than 24 hours to polling day, local election candidate for the Cork South Central ward , Billy MacGill has urged people across the city and county to exercise democracy and use their vote tomorrow.

The Fine Gael candidate said that while he would prefer of course if constituents in his ward gave him their number one vote , that what was really important this year is that people who want change actually go out and vote to make that happen.

SINN Féin local election candidates in Cork city have issued a challenge to Fine Gael and Labour candidates in this Friday’s local election on the issue of the mayoral pact.

Sinn Féin local election candidate for Cork North Central, Thomas Gould, said, “I am calling on Fine Gael and Labour to state whether they will support the election of a new Fianna Fáil Lord Mayor of Cork City as part of the pact that has existed in City Hall between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour.

“Over the past few months I have heard on the doors the anger and frustration that exists among the general public, all of which is directed at Fianna Fáil for their disastrous management of the country.”
