Local elections cost council €200,000

82911270gll0me9gcityhall1THE cost of holding the last local elections in Cork city amounted to more than €200,000 the City Manager has confirmed.

In a written reply to a question put by Fine Gael’s Cllr John Buttimer at tonight’s City Council meeting, Mr Gavin confirmed that the total cost to the Cork taxpayer of holding the elections amounted to €214,263.

Final results for Cork City Council in local elections

THE votes have been tallied and the results are in.

Thirty-one new members were elected to Cork City Council yesterday and today. Three former Lords Mayor lost their seats in what was a tough election for Fianna Fáil while the major beneficiaries were independents and left of centre parties.

Voting centres close

VOTING centres for the local and European elections have closed within the past hour.

Early reports suggest that voter turnout was steady in most areas, but, slightly lower in others. The full extent of turnout will not be realised until tomorrow.

Counting of the votes for the local elections will commence after 9am tomorrow morning. The European and local election votes will first be separated and the city electoral area votes will be counted afterwards in City Hall with the county votes being counted at three centres; Parochial Hall, in West Cork and in Mallow.

And the voting begins

ballotboxMORE than 380,000 eligible voters in Cork will be given the chance to decide who they want to represent them in local government and in Brussels today.

Polling stations for the local and European elections opened at 7am today and will remain open until 10pm this evening.

Reports have suggested that polling across Cork is slow but steady this morning.
