ballot-box-largeWITH the final constituency declared, Ireland has voted in favour of the Lisbon Treaty by a margin of 67.1% to 32.9%

Cork South West proved to be the point of no return, when it declared yes it became mathematically impossible for the no side to prevail.

Only the two Donegal constituencies voted no, both by very narrow margins. Across the nation however the yes vote prevailed by a margin of more than two to one.

Final results

ballot-box-largeTHE remaining three Cork constituencies have declared results in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

Cork East voted 66.1% yes; Cork North West 69.5% and Cork South West 67.2%. All of the Cork constituencies have now declared and all have voted yes by significant margins.

Yes in North Central

CORK North Central, the fourth highest no vote in the country at the last referendum has approved the Lisbon Treaty by a margin of 55.8% to 44.2%.

Turnout was 38,939 or 59.6%. The swing from no to yes was just over 20%.

Exit poll indicates yes victory

ballot-box-largeAN exit poll carried out by Fine Gael indicates that the Lisbon Treaty will be passed by a margin of 60% – 40%.

The poll used a sample of 1,000 voters from 33 locations across the country.

Counting gets underway at 9am this morning and first indications of the result are expected within a couple of hours.

Gormley asked to clarify polling card confusion

lisbon-treaty-09LABOUR TD Ciarán Lynch has asked Minister John Gormley to clarify the current confusion over polling cards.

According to Deputy Lynch, “The situation that has arisen where polling cards and referendum information booklets were printed and distributed together, appears to have caused huge confusion among voters.

“I know of a number of instances where members of the public disposed of their information booklet, unaware that they were also throwing out their polling cards.

“Failure to produce a polling card at the polling station, of course, does not mean that a person cannot vote, and Minister Gormley should make it clear that as long as a voter has valid ID, they are entitled to cast their vote.

Lisbon extends co-decision to common fisheries policy

fishingfleetFISHERIES is one of the portfolios that is subject to the most profound procedural changes under the Lisbon Treaty according to Labour Party senator, Michael McCarthy.

The treaty provides for the introduction of co-decision powers, between the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers in the development of fisheries policy.

The treaty also allows for the establishment of Regional Advisory Councils in the area of fisheries.

BY including the first ever specific reference to domestic violence in a  European  treaty and by giving the EU new powers to tackle the exploitation of women, the Lisbon Treaty strengthens and gives political impetus to the campaign against domestic violence in Ireland, Europe and worldwide according to Labour TD  Kathleen Lynch.

Speaking in Cork today, Deputy Lynch said, “Every  day women in Ireland and all across the world are the victims of abuse of all kinds of  brutality within a relationship or a family, intimidation at work, mental cruelty, sexual abuse or forced prostitution.
