FIANNA Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher has responded to Minister Pat Rabbitte’s comments that the Catholic Church should not involve itself in any political debate relating to legislation for abortion.

Deputy Kelleher commented, “The issue of abortion is one of the most emotive issues in Irish political life.  The question of whether or not the State should legislate for abortion in limited circumstances is due to return to the centre stage of political debate in the coming months as the Government appointed expert group publishes its report. Govt Should Support Legislation to Reduce Risk of Skin Cancer

FIANNA Fáil has published legislation to bring about stricter controls on the use of sunbeds.

Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher says “the use of sunbeds needs to be controlled to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.  140,000 people in Ireland use sunbeds on a regular basis and of these, 20% are between the ages of 15-24 years. [Read more...]

Calorie count legislation will help prevent obesity

FIANNA Fáil has brought legislation before the Dáil to ensure that food advertising and labelling contains calorie information in fast food.

The bill, produced by Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher, requires fast food outlets to clearly display the ‘Calorie Count’ in items being advertised and sold.

Deputy Kelleher said, “I have produced the Advertising, Labelling and Presentation of Fast Food at Fast Food Outlets Bill 2011 as a response to the concern that is being raised about growing levels obesity in Ireland particularly among young people.

Progress on legislation to end upward only rent reviews

LABOUR TD Ciarán Lynch has welcomed progress made on legislation to end upward-only rent reviews.

“I am delighted that legislation that will end the scourge of upward-only rent reviews has been included in the Government’s priority list for this Dáil session.

“The Legislative Programme for this Dáil term was published yesterday and includes on the A-List, the Landlord and Tenant (Business Leases Review Bill), the bill that will give effect to the commitment in the Programme for Government to end upward-only rent reviews in the retail sector. This means that Bill will be published in the coming weeks or months.

Garda attack highlights need for special status

LABOUR TD for Cork South-West Michael McCarthy has called on the Minister for Justice and Equality Alan Shatter TD to urgently bring forward legislation which protects members of An Garda Siochana from assault.

Deputy McCarthy said the recent incident whereby a Garda was burned during a domestic violence incident highlights the need to award members of the force special standing and protection.

Buckley welcomes new EU social media legislation

LABOUR Party Councillor, Gearóid Buckley has welcomed a commitment by the European Union to legislate to protect the personal data of consumers who post information or photos of themselves online.

“The EU Justice Commissioner, Vivienne Reding announced this week to the European Parliament that legislation will be prepared by the summer to cover a legal grey area that has grown with the popularity of social networking.

Head shop loopholes must be closed

headshopSPEAKING on the Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Bill 2010 in the Seanad, Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Community, Senator Jerry Buttimer, said notwithstanding the cross-party support for the legislation, some of the measures taken by the Government to tackle the drugs problem have not worked and that Government policy on the wider issue of drugs and drug abuse are clearly wide of the mark.

“Any measure which clamps down on the sale of legal highs in head shops is to be welcomed. However, we have seen time and again that head shop owners remain one step ahead of the authorities in their creation of new substances that have yet to be blacklisted.
