NORTH side Fianna Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has proposed a motion to Cork City Council that a Sculpture be commissioned at Cornmarket Street to honour the memory of the traditional Cork Shawlies who traded as dealers in the Coal Quay and to acknowledge their unique contribution to the history, culture and heritage of Cork for many generations.
Cllr O’Flynn has also suggested that the public be invited to submit designs for the sculpture.

FIANNA Fáil city councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has suggested that the Government introduce a national “workfare programme” to transfer people in social welfare into community works programmes to deal with the large amounts of people signing on.
“I believe the Minister for Social Protection should introduce a scheme that would tap into the vast social resources of our people and allow them to use their skills in the community rebuilding the economy.
“Everyone receiving social welfare should be offered a place through a local service or authority, commensurate with their qualifications; with those participating receiving a top up and those declining should see a reduction in their payment.

FIANNA Fáil city councillor Kenneth O’Flynn is calling for the establishment a “grot busting” unit in Cork City Council.
Cllr O’Flynn said, “In the UK the ‘grot busters’ campaign has proven hugely effective in seeking the clean up of many areas and in particular the tidying up of so many scruffy buildings.
“If introduced the plan would see Cork City Council grot busters going out to private buildings or areas in need of cleaning and then carrying out this work. After this work would be carried out the person who owns the property would be made to foot the bill.”

RECENTLY agreement was reached between the HSE and Cork City Council to use the former St Mary’s Road Library as a community resource and to provide there a range of facilities for the elderly including the possibility of a drop in centre.
Cllr Kenneth O’Flynn welcomed this announcement saying, “This is a very important development for the elderly people of Shandon and it provides additional facilities to the community.
“I am delighted to see the former St Mary’s Road Library being put to good use. It will continue to be a vital asset to the Shandon community, especially to the elderly people of the area.
“The City Council stressed that they seek to assist community groups and that if anything specific can be done they will be happy to have it examined.”

FIANNA Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has called on the Minister for Justice to reconsider the way fines are issued in Ireland.
“Now when a person fails to pay a fine, they are taken to court, where they again fail to pay. A warrant is issued and the Garda take them up to the Prison, where they are turned away by the Governor, as there are is no space for petty criminals.
“Under the current system there is thousands of euro going astray in unpaid fines and it is time that action is taken to curb this.
