Future of Cork Centre for the Unemployed must be secured

SINN Féin TD Jonathan O’Brien has criticised FAS for reducing staffing levels at the Cork Centre for the Unemployed and said the future of the Centre must be secured.

Deputy O’Brien said, “Since last October there have been significant cuts in both staff and funding at the Cork Centre for the Unemployed. Matters have no reached a stage where the future of the facility is in doubt.

Bobby Sands vigil

SINN Féin will hold a vigil tomorrow at the National Monument to commemorate Bobby Sands, the 30th anniversary of whose death on hunger strike takes place this week.

Jonathan O’Brien TD, who will speak at the event, said, “Bobby Sands died on 5th May 1981 after 66 days on hunger strike, having been elected MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone with 30,493 votes. Over 100,000 people lined the route at his funeral.

122 fewer garda cars on the road

IN response to a question from Sinn Féin Justice Spokesman Jonathan O’Brien TD, the Minister for Justice has revealed there are 122 fewer Garda cars on the road now than in 2009.

So far this year, 123 Garda cars have been taken out of service but only 7 new ones purchased.

Commenting, Deputy O’Brien said, “The figures revealed by Deputy Shatter today are shocking. They show the Gardai operating with 122 fewer cars than they had as recently as two years ago.

Policy will deepen mortgage crisis says TD

SINN Fein TD Jonathan O’Brien has said government policy will deepen the mortgage crisis and called for radical action to help families in arrears with their payments.

Deputy O’Brien said, “In response to a Dáil motion on the mortgage crisis today, Minister for Finance Michael Noonan could offer only vague promises of action in the near future.

O’Brien to speak at Easter commemoration

National Monument Grand Parade

CORK North Central TD Jonathan O’Brien will be the main speaker at the annual Easter Commemoration this Sunday.

The commemoration marks the 95th anniversary of the rising and will depart from the National Monument at 2.30pm on Easter Sunday and march to the Republican Plot in St Finbarr’s cemetery.

It will be led by the MacSwiney/MacCurtain Republican Flute Band.

Oil and gas could help recovery

SINN Féin TD Jonathan O’Brien TD has called for the implementation of a new licensing and taxation regime for oil and gas exploration off our coasts, saying access to a fair share of these revenues by the state could help economic recovery.

Speaking in support of a Sinn Féin motion on the issue in Leinster House, Deputy O’Brien said, “A report prepared for the Department of Energy estimates there could be 10 billion barrels of oil off Ireland’s coasts. We already know there are significant gas finds at the Corrib and Lough Allen fields. Yet as things stand, the benefits of exploiting these resources will go to multinational companies, not the Irish people.

Sinn Féin to protest against Queen state visit

SINN Féin is to hold a rally on 20th May to coincide with the visit to Cork by Queen Elizabeth II, which they say will “celebrate the city’s democratic and republican tradition”.

The party are calling the protest the “Peoples’ Rally against the Royal Visit” which will take place from 12-4pm at the plaza beside the National Monument on the Grand Parade.

Bill paves the way for privatisation of An Post says TD

SINN Féin TD Jonathan O’Brien, speaking as the Communications Regulation Postal Services Bill 2010 was passed in the Dáil, said the bill was designed to liberalise  postal services and could lead to the privatisation of significant sections of An Post.

Deputy O’Brien said, “This bill was originally drafted by Fianna Fáil and is designed to liberalise the postal services. It could lead to the privatisation of significant sections of An Post.
