Gormley running scared from Environment Committee says senator

ENVIRONMENT Minister John Gormley’s refusal to attend a meeting of the Environment Committee to discuss the Report on Severe Weather Events shows that he is “running scared from the Report’s finding and that he is completely unwilling to take responsibility for his portfolio” according to Cork Fine Gael senator Jerry Buttimer.

“Back in July the Joint Committee on Environment, Heritage & Local Government made the decision to invite Minister Gormley to its next meeting, scheduled to take place on 21st September to discuss the Committee’s Fourth Report on Severe Weather Events. This week the Committee has been informed that the Minister has declined its invitation.

TB information needed in Cork schools

FINE Gael Cork South Central Senator, Jerry Buttimer, has reiterated his Party’s call for a full review of TB services right across the country, following reports that the number of children infected with the disease has reached 25 in one Cork school.

Senator Buttimer went on to say that full support and information must be made available to staff and parents, not just at Ballintemple National School but at schools throughout the county. The Cork South Central Senator also said that a drop-in clinic where children can go to be tested should be set-up to alleviate the concern of parents.

Orthodontic waiting list “staggering”

FIGURES released by Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer, indicate that large numbers of children in Cork and the HSE South region are being forced to wait for orthodontic assessment to determine whether or not they may need corrective treatment.

“Official figures released to Fine Gael by the HSE show that there are an overwhelming 3,455 children in Cork and the HSE South area waiting for orthodontic assessment, and that they are waiting a lengthy 12 months to have that assessment. This, compared to just 168 children in the HSE North East where children are being seen in around 10 weeks.

Visit Cork says senator

82911270gll0me9gcityhall1FINE Gael Cork South Central Senator, Jerry Buttimer, has urged people to come and visit Cork for the Cork Heritage Open Day which is being held this week on Saturday 28th August.

“This is a great opportunity to visit 35 heritage sites around Cork for free. I would encourage people to bring their families along to see what Cork has to offer. The buildings which can be visited range from military to historic and cultural. Cork has something to offer everyone and as a proud Corkonian I am proud that the Cork Heritage Day will allow people to experience all that Cork has to offer.

“There are activities for all ages so I am urging people to visit Cork and experience the reasons why it was recently voted one of the Lonely Planet’s top ten places to visit,” he said.

“Come clean” on Cork projects says senator

FINE Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer has called on Minister Batt O’Keeffe to “come clean” on which infrastructure projects in Cork, which were not mentioned in the Government’s capital spending plan launched last Monday but which the Minister said funding will be made available for, are to get the green light.

“Since the announcement, earlier in the week, of the Government’s new spending plan, which is essentially phase one of next December’s Budget, we have seen one Minister after another lining up to defend projects in their departments or their constituencies.
