BANDON councillor Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that Cork County Council will make Harte’s Car Park available free of charge from Saturday 26th November until Christmas Eve.

The announcement by Town Manager, Kevin O’Neill, comes just days after County Manager Martin Riordan made €5,000 available to erect the Christmas lights in Bandon.

Councillor welcomes increase in winter road maintenance grant

BANDON-based Labour councillor Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that an additional €161,694 has been allocated to Cork County Council’s Winter road maintenance grant.

This additional grant allocation brings Corks County Council’s total winter road maintenance grant to €1,445,246.

“This increase of €161,694 is very much welcomed. Last year our roads were devastated by a severe winter cold spell, and with forecasts predicting similar artic conditions again this year, our roads are destined to fall casualty to the elements.

Initiative will see ghost estates finished and local people back to work

BANDON Labour councillor Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that a British firm that wants to use ghost estates to train unemployed apprentices is to meet with the Minister for Housing and the Housing and Sustainable Communities Agency tomorrow.

“Equity Share Partnership (ESP) wants to use the unfinished properties to provide training and housing for the unemployed.

“This is a practical solution to a national problem. The company has begun negotiations with NAMA, FÁS and the banks to complete a pilot project on a ghost estates in Bandon.

Limerick merger “a step in the right direction”

LABOUR county councillor Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that both Limerick city and county councils are likely to be merged, but has urged the government to take the opportunity to overhaul local government to create wider savings and also deliver a 21st century service to the citizens of Ireland.

“I welcome this news about Limerick county and city councils.

“It is these common sense solutions that will deliver real savings for government. However, the buck should not stop here.

Third level funding needs to be sustainable

BANDON Labour Councillor Gearoid Buckley is calling for a more sustainable system of third level funding to be introduced.

“Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has now asked colleges to allow the €2,000 to be paid in two instalments.

“Mr Quinn has requested third-level institutions to allow €1,000 to be paid in September and the remaining €1,000 in January.

“He has written to all the higher education institutions and expects them to have the system in place in time for the new college year.

No funding for Bandon River dredging

BANDON Labour councillor Gearóid Buckley says residents face another “winter of worry” as the town council is denied funding for summer dredging on the Bandon River.

He made the comments following the rejection of Cork County Council’s application to the OPW for funding to carry out remedial works on the Bandon River.

Call for closure of river walk

BANDON Labour councillor Gearóid Buckley has requested that the Bandon river walkway be closed immediately and a report given to Bandon Town Council on the safety of the new walkway.

“Part of the walkway collapsed last night, and it is only a matter of time before the walkway collapses completely and someone gets hurt. There appears to be nothing supporting the footpath for 1.5 m of the walkway.

Housing assessment changes welcomed

COUNCILLOR Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that the regulations for the assessment of social housing have been changed.

“From the 1st April 2011, three income threshold bands have been established and housing authorities assigned to a band based on an analysis of the local private rental cost of housing accommodation in each area.
