SENATOR Deirdre Clune would like to extend her support to Gardai who objected to permission being granted for an off licence in the Douglas Court Shopping Centre.

It is feared that the opening of another alcohol retailer will increase the level of anti-social behaviour in the area where nine off licences are already located.

Garda resources must be protected as burglaries in County Cork soar

CORK North West Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Moynihan, has called on the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter to reconsider his agenda of closing and downgrading local garda stations, in light of new figures revealing a surge in burglaries throughout rural Cork over the past year.

A report in today’s Irish Times reveals that the number of burglaries in Cork North has increased by 29% since 2010, while there was a 24% increase in Cork West during the same time period, these figures are among the largest increases in the country.

Good progress made on child protection

PEAKING in the Seanad following the publication of the Garda Inspectorate report on the investigation of sexual offences against children, Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator, Deirdre Clune, said that putting the right systems in place and ensuring that all child protection agencies are communicating with one another is the most effective way of combatting child sexual abuse.

Senator Clune went on to commend the Government, the HSE and the Garda Siochána on the progress that has been made since the time of the inspection in 2010.

Senior Garda appointments welcomed

CORK South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, TD, that the government has given approval to appoint senior Gardaí.

“In the Dáil today I raised with the Minister the issue of replacing retiring senior Gardaí.  The Minister confirmed that the government has approved the necessary appointments, he also outlined that on-going reform in An Garda Síochána will maintain the excellent policing delivered by members of the Gardaí.

Gardaí to get sound level meters

CORK East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed the roll out of sound level meters to Garda Siochana across the country. Sound level meters will allow Garda to record the decibel levels emitted from car exhausts and modified cars.

“Following a parliamentary question to the Minister for Justice, I was advised by the Minister that, following a tendering process, a supplier for sound level meters has been selected and that the contract will be finalised on 18th October.

Cork loses 19 senior gardaí in 2009

gardaiCORK South Central TD Michael McGrath has called on the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner to ensure that the three Cork Garda divisions receive a significant allocation on the 170 Garda promotions which were approved by Government yesterday.

The three Garda divisions in Cork (Cork City, Cork West and Cork North) suffered a net loss of 19 Garda officers at Sergeant level and above during 2009, according to figures released following a Dáil question by Deputy McGrath. The Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform has confirmed that he has received approval to fill 170 vacancies at Sergeant level and above throughout the country. Deputy McGrath has requested that the three garda divisions in Cork would be among the garda priority list for filling vacancies given the scale of retirements in Cork during 2009.
