O’Byrne cautious over garda station closure

THE chairman of Passage West’s Joint Policing Committee, Labour Party councillor Dave O’Byrne has said that he will reserve judgement on reports that the towns Garda station will be closed until after he has spoken with An Garda Siochana at the next meeting of the committee.

“Our next policing committee meeting is scheduled for the 10th of October and I have no doubt that the issue of the station closure will be the hot topic of the night,” said Cllr O’Byrne.

People must have say on new Garda Station

LOCAL people must be consulted before a site is finally chosen for the proposed new Glanmire Garda Station according to local councillor and General Election candidate Pat Burton.

The Fine Gael councillor said, “The current ‘preferred site’ is located on an industrial estate away from the most populated parts of Glanmire. From talking to local people it seems clear to me that many are in favour of locating the new garda station at the heart of the community, not in an outlying area.

Ballincollig Garda Station a step closer

garda-signTHE effort to build a new garda station in Ballincollig has taken a step forward after the Minister for Education, Batt O’Keeffe confirmed that the Office of Public Works (OPW) is to ask building contractors to express interest in the project.

A pre-qualification notice will appear on the Government’s website for public projects, etenders.ie, early next week seeking expressions of interest from building contractors.

The OPW will then shortlist a number of these contractors and ask them to formally tender for the project.

McCarthy Welcomes completion of Dunmanway Garda Station

LABOUR Party Senator for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy has welcomed the completion of refurbishment works at Dunmanway Garda Station. The Station party finally moved in this week after a seven year stay in temporary accommodation across the road.

Senator McCarthy spearheaded a campaign to embarrass the Government into action on this issue, and famously lead a protest to Bantry to confront the then Justice Minister Michael McDowell.
