MORE college researchers are set to team up with businesses to produce products that have market potential and can create high-quality jobs following a €37 million investment boost announced today by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.
Minister O’Keeffe has set aside €37 million in extra funding over the next six years for investment in new research centres which will bring industry and academics together to work on market-focused innovative products.

LABOUR Party TD for Cork East Seán Sherlock has called on Environment Minister John Gormley to fast track the procurement process to facilitate urgent repairs to water pipes in Cobh Co Cork
The call follows the detection of lead in the water supply to 70 households in the Cobh area as a result of rusting pipes. Cork County Council is to now make application under the National Rehabilitation Programme to the department to fund the works.

LABOUR TD Kathleen Lynch has called for a full evaluation of ABA schools for autistic children.
“Services provided to autistic children in ABA schools are under serious threat, and families are now fearful that many of these schools now face closure. I believe that any move against ABA schools would be both retrograde and unjustifiable.
“There seems to be a sense in the Department of Education that all children who have been diagnosed with Autism should be schooled exclusively in mainstream schools. Mainstreaming works very well in a lot of cases, and where it works well it should be encouraged, but there are other situations where ABA is a more appropriate.

COMMUNITIES from right across North Cork are set to benefit from €100,000 in funding from Cork County Council’s 2010 Amenity Grants Scheme.
The scheme was established to support community and voluntary groups who wish to build or improve their existing facilities in their respective communities.
The scheme can also be used for groups who need to purchase necessary equipment for their community facilities.

A CORK city councillor is calling for an investigation into why millions of euro in taxpayer’s money should be provided to support the Cork Opera House if the building is now to be closed for three months of the year.
Fine Gael councillor Patricia Gosch said that €1.3 million in funding had been approved by the City Council, which is the main shareholder, this year as well loans being written off.
