Welcome for guidelines for Irish couples on foreign surrogacy

FINE Gael Cork Senator, Colm Burke, has welcomed the publication by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter, of guidance for Irish couples on surrogacy arrangements made abroad.

Senator Burke questioned the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald, last week at the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children on this issue in light of the number of Irish people that are arranging for children to be born through surrogacy, in particular in the Ukraine, India and the US.

Sack railway inspectors says O’Keeffe

CORK TD Ned O’Keeffe today called for those responsible for the recent railway bridge collapse in Malahide to be sacked.

Speaking on the Eamon Keane show on Newstalk radio, Deputy O’Keeffe said the workers who inspected the collapsed Malahide estuary “should resign” and that “if they were in the private sector they’d be sacked”.

Deputy O’Keeffe insisted Transport Minister Noel Dempsey should visit the scene. “Minister Dempsey should have gone out to investigate it himself personally and he should call in the railway investigation people and he should be asking for a resignation.
