Progress on unified patent welcomed

MINISTER for Research and Innovation Seán Sherlock welcomed the adoption of a common approach on the implementation of a unified patent protection at the Extraordinary Competitiveness Council in Luxembourg today.

Speaking of the lengthy delay in failing to agree these proposals over several decades, he said, “We cannot afford to continually undermine Europe’s competitiveness by delaying the introduction of the Unified Patent Protection and today, we are finally moving towards the goal of issuing the first unitary patent in the near future.

Bord Gáis chief urges Yes to Lisbon

John MullinsTHE Chief Executive of Bord Gáis and Cork Chamber Board Member, John Mullins has urged the people of Cork to vote yes in the upcoming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty saying that a vote for the treaty is a vote for economic recovery and long term prosperity.

Speaking as part of Cork Chamber’s Campaign for a Yes Vote in the Lisbon Referendum, Mr Mullins said that the forthcoming Referendum on Lisbon is one of the most important referenda in the history of the Irish State and is one which is critical in ensuring that the country stays at the heart of Europe.

Public support for EU membership grows despite recession

ROCK -bottom levels of public confidence in the economy have not dinted Ireland’s enthusiasm for EU membership, according to a new Eurobarometer survey released this week.
The study shows that seven out of ten Irish people think EU membership has been good for this country, an increase of two per cent since last year. The TNS MRBI figures were compiled in June 2009, at a time when economic confidence in Ireland was third lowest in Europe. Yet the poll reveals that overall, Irish people are the third most enthusiastic supporters of European integration.

Cork Senator urges yes vote to Lisbon

CORK Senator Paul Bradford has today urged voters to vote yes to the upcoming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty saying that the outcome of the October vote  will determine Ireland’s future in Europe and the future of the Irish economy.

The Fine Gael Senator said that he believes that Ireland and Europe, has changed utterly since it went to the polls in June 2008 and that while the doubts and fears of the Irish people at that time must be recognised, the public must also acknowledge that the passing of the Lisbon Treaty is a vital step on the road to ensuring a strong and peaceful Europe, a Europe that works and creates work.

Labour MEP backs EU-funded project to help sex trafficking victims

Gardaí and health workers from Munster are among a delegation that will travel to several European countries over the summer to identify the best ways of helping victims of sex trafficking in Ireland.

The Dignity Project, organised by the Immigrant Council of Ireland, will report back in November with recommendations on which services the government should put in place.

Labour MEP Alan Kelly says it’s vital that supports including medical aid and counselling are provided for trafficking victims.

Sinnott pledges to continue support for carers

OUTGOING MEP for Ireland South, Kathy Sinnott has pledged that she will continue her support for carers despite failing to retain her seat at this week’s elections.

The Cork based MEP said that she will be continuing to work as a carer at home and will also keep working to support carers in Ireland.

“I have been a carer for over 30 years and understand the many challenges facing carers. I have worked on behalf of carers during my term in the Parliament, especially in founding and chairing the European Parliament Interest Group on Carers and Caring. One of the achievements of the Carers Group was getting carers included in the Workforce for Health.

Funding boost for Charleville school

BALLYHEA National School in Charleville is set to benefit from a funding boost to help cover the cost of building a safe set-down area for pupils and fixing the waste water system at the facility.

The funding was announced earlier today by Education Minister and Cork TD, Batt O’ Keeffe who recently sanctioned a two-classroom extension at the school.

A CORK Senator has today raised the plight of fixed rate mortgage holders in the Seanad.

According to Labour Party Senator for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy, one in three mortgage holders is currently on fixed rate mortgages and so have not experienced the benefits from the recent ECB interest rate cuts like those on variable rates.
