FINE Gael Innovation Spokesperson Deirdre Clune has said the results of an ASTI survey proves the quality of science education in Ireland is deteriorating as a consequence of the Government’s Education cutbacks.
“The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland has released the results of a survey of 300 schools which revealed that: Almost 10 per cent of secondary schools have been forced to drop physics as a subject offered to students; In 70 per cent of schools, higher and ordinary level science classes have been combined.

THE Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe today explained to Fine Gael’s education spokesman Brian Hayes the commitment under the new Programme for Government to increase funding to schools.
Minister O’Keeffe said, “For the second day running, Brian Hayes is confused so let me explain to him what’s happening in Government.
“I’ve already secured an increase in capitation, money used for the day-to-day running of a school of €20 million this year.

FINE Gael Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes has accused Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe of abandoning the Programme for Government.
According to Deputy Hayes, the Programme for Government states that the capitation grant for schools will be maintained at current levels but when being interviewed yesterday evening, Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe rolled back on that saying that it is a matter for the Budget to decide whether the capitation grant will be cut or not.

THE Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, has paid tribute to 64 students graduating with further education certificates in Fermoy saying the awards celebrate their achievements and reward their efforts.
Speaking at an awards ceremony in Coláiste an Chraoibhín in Fermoy yesterday evening, Minister O’Keeffe said the certificates from the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) show there are now greater upskilling opportunities and more people have the chance to take part in lifelong learning.

DOCUMENTS released to Fine Gael Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes under Freedom of Information show that 200 extra teaching support posts are needed to accommodate children with special needs in mainstream classrooms.
According to Deputy Hayes, this information contradicts assertions by Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe earlier this year, that children in more than 100 special needs classes which have been abolished could be placed in mainstream classrooms as these children will be provided with additional teaching supports through the General Allocation Model.
