More job losses in East Cork

sean-sherlock-bigLABOUR spokesperson for agriculture and food Seán Sherlock today said that the news that Dawn Meats is to close its operation in Midleton is a “damning indictment” of the government’s record in the agri-food sector.

The Cork East TD added that the job losses are the latest in a number of significant blows suffered in his constituency.

“What is worse for the workers at Dawn Meats who will lose their jobs, and the thousands more across the country who want to earn a living, is that the current Government has missed an opportunity to introduce measures that will generate employment.

Cork to benefit from major new aid package

header2CORK is set to benefit from a new €69 million government aid package announced today.
This afternoon An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, TD  announced details of 15 capital investment projects, which have been awarded Government grant assistance of over €69 million under the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s Beef and Sheepmeat Investment Fund.
The grant-aid is expected to contribute to an actual investment in projects in the region of €168 million and the investments are expected to increase net sales and exports by €400 million and ensure a net expansion in employment, with over 800 additional jobs being provided by 2012 when the investment package is due to be completed.
