CORK Chamber has expressed disappointment at the decision by Cork City Council and Cork County Council not to reduce commercial rates for 2012, a system which is grossly unfair on the productive job-creating aspects of the business community.

Cork Chamber responds to city and county budgets

CORK Chamber today welcomed the decision by Cork City Council and Cork County Council not to increase commercial rates and local authority charges in 2011 and acknowledged both local authorities’ cognisance of the inability of Cork’s business community to finance any increased levels of expenditure, but warned that current government policies are jeopardising local government and placing an unfair burden on the business community.

Cork Chamber Chief Executive Mr Conor Healy said, “Cork Chamber recognises the hard decisions taken by both Councils in preparing balanced budgets given the current difficulties the economy finds itself in. The move by both Councils to ring fence 1 per cent of rates income, equivalent to over €1.5 million for an economic development fund for the first time is very much welcomed by the Chamber.

Action needed to protect Cork from future flooding

COMMENTING on Cork Chamber’s recent submission to the Lee CFRAMS Flood Risk Management Plan, Chief Executive Conor Healy outlined the actions needed to protect Cork from future flooding and once again called for an independent inquiry.

Mr Healy said,  “The Chamber has questioned the cost-benefit analysis carried out by the Office of Public Works (OPW) into flood defences, which suggested that it would not be beneficial to spend €140 million on the reconstruction of river defences in Cork City.

Chamber seeks funding commitment for Docklands bridges

Eastern_Gateway_BridgeCORK Chamber Chief Executive Conor Healy has today warmly welcomed An Bord Pleanala’s approval of Planning Permission for the proposed Docklands bridges and supporting infrastructure.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Healy stated that, “These bridges are critical to the long-term development of the Docklands area, and this planning approval is a positive step forward in the process of realising the potential of the area.  However, it is important that this announcement is quickly followed by the necessary Government commitment to the project.

THE Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy today thanked Cork’s business community for their help and support in the present crisis and urged the people of Cork to strongly support Cork businesses.

The Lord Mayor was speaking in advance of the launch of the upcoming “A Christmas Celebration on the Grand Parade, presented by Cork City Council in association with Bord Gàis Energy,” launching on Friday, November 27.

The Lord Mayor said, “Despite our recent difficulties, and because of the work of so many, Cork is still ready to start the Christmas countdown. We are asking everyone to come and enjoy the city centre lights, markets and shopping”.

Concern for future of Cork Docklands

POLITICIANS and business leaders in Cork have today voiced serious concern about the future of Cork’s dockland’s development.

This concern follows on from comments made by the  Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley TD in the Dáil today about the future of the project.

Responding to a Dáil question regarding the implementation of the report of the Cork Docklands Development Forum, the Minister said that the government would have to defer funding decisions relating to the Eastern Gateway Bridge recommended by the Cork Docklands Development Forum “having regard to the prevailing budgetary constraints.”
