Burke calls for greater scrutiny of European matters by Oireachtas

FINE Gael Cork North Central Senator, Colm Burke, has today (Tuesday) called on the Houses of the Oireachtas to increase their level of scrutiny of European Affairs. Senator Burke was speaking following his attendance at a conference entitled ‘Parliamentary Scrutiny of European Affairs’ at Westminster this week.

“The Lisbon Treaty included explicit democratic provisions to strengthen the role of the European Parliament and national parliaments in European matters. As a former member of the European Parliament, I have advocated, for some time now, that the Oireachtas makes greater use of these provisions in order to increase our participation in European affairs.

Cost of medicines to be significantly reduced following enactment of price control bill

FINE Gael Senator for Cork North Central and Seanad Spokesperson for Health, Colm Burke, has today (Thursday) said the enactment of the Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012, which will see generic drugs being used more often, will significantly reduce the cost of drugs to the State, easing budgetary pressure.

Senator Burke recently commissioned a report which found that nearly two thirds of final year medical students (65.5%) do not plan on working within the Irish hospital system one year after their graduation. Huge demand from Cork clubs for sports funding

FINE Gael Cork North Central Senator Colm Burke, has today (Wednesday) said that there has been huge demand from clubs across Cork for the latest round of the Sports Capital Programme. A total of 217 applications have been received from Cork clubs, seeking more than €21,083,163 in funding.

FINE Gael Cork Senator and the Seanad Spokesperson on Health, Senator Colm Burke, has said the issues that are forcing Irish medical graduates and interns to move abroad to complete their training or to gain experience must be addressed so that their skills can be retained in Ireland for the benefit of everyone.

“While there has previously been little concrete evidence indicating the actual number of junior doctors and medical graduates moving overseas, anecdotal evidence suggests that the numbers are significant and it is incumbent upon us to find out why.
