Minister accused of “ducking responsibilities”

LABOUR TD Ciarán Lynch has accused Environment Minister John Gormley of “ducking his responsibilities” by not attending an Oireachtas committee meeting on extreme weather.

“It was with deep disappointment that I found out today that Environment Minister John Gormley has decided to duck his responsibilities by rejecting an invitation to meet with the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Heritage and Local Government, to discuss the aftermath of the last year’s extreme weather events.

Failure to process applications not acceptable

ACCORDING to information released to the Labour Party in recent days, just 12 per cent of applications to the HSE for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Grant have been processed to date in the HSE South Area. This area covers Counties Cork and Kerry according to Ciarán Lynch TD.

“To date some 18,000 applications have been received by the HSE but only 2,100 have been processed. This leaves almost 16,000 applications outstanding. The failure of the HSE to process these applications will put already hard-pressed families to the pin of their collar. It would suggest that many thousands of families, who badly need this additional support, will simply not have it when they need it most.

Only a fine for biological weapon use!

600px-BiohazardANYONE caught stockpiling or using biological weapons in Ireland could end up being sentenced to just a few months in prison or being fined just a few thousand euro, under the provisions of the Biological Weapons Bill 2010 says Cork Labour TD Ciarán Lynch.

“The Bill which seeks to ban the use of ‘asphyxiating, poisonous or other gases, and of bacteriological methods of warfare’, and the ‘development, production and stockpiling’ of biological chemical weapons was published in recent days.

“Section 4 of the Bill, leaves open the prospect that somebody who is found guilty of an offence under the legislation, could be sentenced to jail for a month or two, or could even get off with just a fine.

Homeowners paying for banks’ reckless behaviour says TD

THIS week’s mortgage interest rate increase, announced by Bank Of Ireland will fill many mortgage holders with trepidation according to Labour TD Ciarán Lynch.

“This increase of almost half of one per cent means that rates are heading for an increase of 1.5 per cent in this year alone. At a time when the underlying ECB rate has remained static for 14 consecutive months, such increases are completely unjustifiable.

Minister Gormley asked to respond to extreme weather report

LABOUR TD Ciarán Lynch has welcomed a request by the Oireachtas Environment Committee asking Environment Minister John Gormley to discuss the extreme weather events of last winter.

“I welcome the fact that the Oireachtas Environment Committee has agreed to my proposal to invite Environment Minister John Gormley to meet with us in September to discuss the report published by the Committee on Extreme Weather Events.

“We would like to ask Minister Gormley how he and his Department propose responding to the various recommendations put forward in the report.
