Council budget must protect core services

THE Sinn Féin leader on Cork City Council, Chris O’Leary has said the council’s budget must protect core services, and that there are other areas where savings can be made.

Cllr O’Leary who is also chair of the council’s finance committee said, “Indications are that this year’s budget will involve a cut of up to €12 million in expenditure.

“While the council can do nothing about cuts in the funding it receives from central government, every effort must be made to protect core services.

SINN Féin city councillor Chris O’Leary has called on individuals and groups opposed to the budget to support a protest taking place at 5pm on Tuesday, December 6th at Patrick’s Bridge in Cork.

Cllr O’Leary said, “Today’s budget announcements show that Labour and Fine Gael are taking a page out of Fianna Fail’s copybook and targeting families, social welfare recipients and public sector workers as they continue with the failed policies of cutbacks and austerity.

TD should explain “broken promise” say Sinn Féin

SINN Féin city councillor Chris O’Leary has called on Labour TD Ciarán Lynch to explain what he claims is the South Central deputy’s U-turn on social welfare cuts.

“The Sinn Féin motion reminded deputies that over 205,000 children (19%) are ‘at risk of poverty’ while another 96,000 children (9%) are living in consistent poverty. This means they are experiencing material deprivation: they don’t have a warm waterproof coat or they go without a substantial meal daily.

TD challenged on disability group funding

SINN Féin councillor Chris O’Leary has challenged Kathleen Lynch TD over the decision to axe funding for People with Disabilities Ireland, claiming it will deprive thousands of people with a disability of a voice.

“The decision will mean the closure of the organisation’s local office and resource centre in Cork.

“People with Disabilities Ireland is a nationwide organisation representing all people with disabilities and working to give them a voice in the decision making process that affects their lives.

Stop the handover protest

CORK Sinn Féin are to mark the first anniversary of the EU/IMF intervention by holding a protest this Saturday against the continued handover of taxpayers’ money to international bondholders.

Speaking ahead of the event, Cllr Chris O’Leary said, “This week marks the first anniversary of the intervention by the EU and IMF in Ireland’s affairs last November. “Since then we have had a general election, but the new government has failed to renegotiate the bailout deal and instead followed the failed Fianna Fáil policies of paying billions into the banks while imposing cutbacks on lower and middle-income earners.

SINN Féin councillor Chris O’Leary has called on the City Manager to make a full statement to the council regarding his officials’ dealings with celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin over the controversial Sky Garden project.

He was speaking after councillors received correspondence from Diarmuid Gavin and his design team requesting to address a full meeting of the council on the issue and suggesting that council officials sought to keep information out of the public domain.

SINN Féin Councillor Chris O’Leary is calling on people to join him in a campaign to “Stop the Handover” of billions of euro to Anglo bondholders.

“The first payment is happening today, (Wednesday 2nd November) and will be paid out to an unguaranteed senior Anglo bondholder to the tune of €700 million.
