SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry has said that city councillors should refuse to pass a new council-inspired action plan for the Blackpool village area until “such time as the council’s planning department is prepared to outline a hard hitting plan of campaign to tackle dereliction in the historic village”.
Cork City Council will be asked to pass the Blackpool Village Area Action Plan next Monday, Sept 13, at the first meeting of the council since the summer recess.

FIANNA Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has welcomed the decision by Cork City Council to place ornamental plaques in Blackpool to indicate the old laneways of the area.
“This work has taken some time to finalise but I am delighted that it will begin in 2010,” he said.
The project will see 20 plaques placed around Blackpool with the names of the historic laneways inscribed on them.

WORKER’S Party representative, Cllr Ted Tynan has voiced his opposition to plans to relocate the Gurranabraher library saying that it should stay at its present location and be further improved.
Cllr Tynan’s comments follow on from a public meeting which took place earlier this week where residents expressed concerns at plans by the City Council to close the St Mary’s Road branch library and replace it at a rented premises in Blackpool Shopping Centre.

THE Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy has today called on the Taoiseach to progress the much needed new rail projects in Cork.
He said that the continuing delays in in progressing work at the agreed rails station at Kilbarry, Cork and the delay in the proposed regeneration of Kent Station was of great concern and action needs to be taken now to get these projects moving.

BUS Eireann bosses in Cork are being urged to re-consider their plans to discontinue the No 12 Bus service from the middle of June.
Fine Gael Local Election Candidate for Cork City North Central Ward, Joe Kavanagh said that the service is vital to the people it serves in The Glen, Blackpool and Glenthorn Estate on Dublin Hill and said that these people are distraught at the idea of losing this means of transport which they have depended on for many years.
