Allen thanks friends and supporters at Civic Reception

FORMER Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central, Bernard Allen has thanked his many friends and supporters and especially his own family for the help and encouragement he received during a political career lasting more than 30 years.

Mr Allen made the comments at a Civic Reception held at Cork City Hall.

Elected to Cork Corporation in 1979, he was first elected as a TD in 1981 and held his seat at every subsequent election until his retirement prior to the 2011 General Election.

“I want to thank the city of Cork for this reception and the honour I feel in being here today. It has been a long journey for me in politics and I will always be grateful for the support the people of Cork have given me throughout my time in politics.

Cork’s longest serving TD, Bernard Allen has announced he is to retire from politics at the next general election.

The Fine Gael Cork North Central TD and Chairman of the PAC, said, “Having consulted with my family and friends, I have decided not to contest the next General Election. It I with great reluctance that I have reached this decision especially at a time when I am convinced that the Irish people will give Enda Kenny and the Fine Gael Party a strong mandate to lead this country out of the mire that it is in.

20 years of Fianna Fáil ends in “total failure”

DESPITE being in power almost constantly for the past 20 years, Fianna Fáil’s prolonged period in office has now ended in complete failure according to Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen.

“This week there are more than 500 people waiting on trolleys in our hospitals, with Cork’s CUH topping the list,” said Deputy Allen.

Road network far from complete

THE announcement from soon to retire Transport Minister Noel Dempsey that the national motorway network is now complete underlines just how short-sighted the current Fianna Fáil government’s approach to infrastructure really is according to Cork Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen.

“When he says the motorway network is complete, what Minister Dempsey really means is that the motorways linking Dublin to other major cities in the country have now been completed,” said Deputy Allen.
