Bed closures should not go ahead in advance of Fair Deal

FIANNA Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher has said the Government should not be proceeding with plans to close up to 1,000 community nursing home beds while the review of the Fair Deal scheme has not been completed.

Following a Dáil debate on the Fair Deal scheme this afternoon it is still not clear when the Government is going to publish the Terms of Reference for the Review.

Reilly plan will have “drastic impact on most vulnerable”

FIANNA Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher TD has described as “drastic and shocking” elements of the HSE service plan for 2012 signed off by the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly.

In particular Deputy Kelleher has raised serious concerns about the loss of up to 900 beds in Community Nursing Units across the country and the increase in waiting time (up to nine months) for elective procedures.

Deputy Kelleher said, “There is no justification for the closure of these beds or the ‘small number of units’ which will be considered for total closure this year as outlined in the Service Plan.
