BATT O’Keeffe has become the sixth cabinet minister to resign his position forcing a major reshuffle on Brian Cowen.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation joins cabinet colleagues Mary Harney, Dermot Ahern, Noel Dempsey, Tony Killeen and Micheál Martin in departing the cabinet.

Minimum wage reduction from February 1st

Batt O’Keeffe yesterday signed the ministerial order for the reduction of the minimum wage and the cut in the rate will now come into effect the week after next.

Minister O’Keeffe moved the expected date for the minimum wage cut forward three months the €1 euro an hour cut from €8.65euro to €7.65euro will now come into effect on Feb 1st as opposed to by May 1st as stipulated in the government’s deal with the EU and the IMF.

150 jobs for Cork

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD has announced 150 jobs in a leading US software firm in Cork.

Quest Software is to set up an international shared services centre in the city and the new jobs will come on stream over the next three years.

Quest Software, which has a sales office in Dublin, wants to expand in Ireland and the new Cork operation will be the key international service centre for the firm’s growth worldwide.

Economy shows signs of return to growth – O’Keeffe

THE domestic economy is showing strong signs of a return to growth and the Government’s four-year plan is the only credible roadmap for economic recovery, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.

Minister O’Keeffe was speaking following the release of the latest data from the European Union’s statistics office, Eurostat, which shows that Irish growth is the fastest rate of expansion among eurozone members.

Compo claims fee cut to save €2m a year

INDIVIDUALS and insurance firms could save up to €2 million each year following a move by the Injuries Board to cut the cost of making compensation claims, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.

Minister O’Keeffe has accepted a recommendation by InjuriesBoard.ie, the operating name for the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB), to reduce fees paid by claimants and insurance firms using its services.

ONE in five babies in the world will be fed on Irish-produced infant milk formula when the new €50 million investment by Danone Baby Nutrition comes on stream in Cork, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.

Minister O’Keeffe said one in seven babies worldwide are fed on Irish-produced infant milk formula.

Jobs promise

THE Government’s investment in the State’s enterprise agencies will help to generate almost 30,000 new jobs next year, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.

IDA Ireland aims to create 9,800 direct and 6,800 indirect jobs next year through foreign direct investments while Enterprise Ireland’s target is for 6,300 direct jobs and 4,400 spin-off jobs through export-led Irish firms.
