THE Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe today announced that one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical firms is to create 100 new finance jobs in Cork over the next 12 months.
Eli Lilly, which has been manufacturing pharmaceutical products in Kinsale since 1981, is to begin recruiting immediately for the new positions in a European financial services centre in Cork city. Most of the new jobs will be filled by next spring.
The new European financial services centre will support Eli Lilly’s European operations, providing general accounting, order-to-cash and purchase-to-pay activities.

THERE is major uncertainty over the prospect of any school in rural Ireland reopening this week despite the fact that Batt O’Keeffe today reversed his decision requiring schools to close until Thursday according to Cork Labour TD Sean Sherlock.

THE country’s 4,000 schools are to get free access to online versions of the popular Encyclopaedia Britannica and World Book as part of an e-learning initiative announced today by the Minister for Education, Batt O’Keeffe.
The online encyclopaedias use text, video clips, three-dimensional simulations, research aids and other new media in presenting information to students.
Announcing the online move, Minister O’Keeffe said, “Making these encyclopaedias available online to schools free of charge demonstrates our commitment to providing digital reference content to teachers and students in a way that encourages learning through technology.

Batt O Keeffe
THE Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, has announced €250,000 for a major extension project in Coppeen National School, Enniskeane, Co Cork.
The grant will be used to build two extra classroom, convert two of the existing smaller classrooms into one larger classroom, and provide ancillary accommodation.
On a visit to the school, Minister O’Keeffe said it had strong educational record and deep roots in the community.

Batt O' Keeffe
COUNTY Cork VEC today signed a contract with the landowner for the purchase of a 19-acre site in Gortnaclohy, Skibbereen for a new 900-pupil community school, according to the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe.
The school will be built as part of the fourth bundle of the Department’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme.
Announcing the move, Minister O’Keeffe said, “I’m pleased that long-running efforts to secure a site for the new school have now come to an end.
