Minister O’Keeffe said that he believed the Taoiseach had the support of the “very large majority” of the parliamentary party.

He added that he believed the Taoiseach would lead Fianna Fáil into the general election.

Small firms urged to tender for public contracts

THE Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD, wants small businesses to tender for more public sector contracts.

He has asked public sector organisations to build stronger relationships with the Government’s job creation agency, Enterprise Ireland, to improve their procurement practices and get a better grasp of the indigenous enterprise landscape.

€85m fund for new high-tech firms

THE Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD, today launched a new €85 million venture capital fund which will help high-tech firms in Ireland to get off the ground.

Venture capitalists provide risk capital for firms that would otherwise find it hard to raise collateral through traditional sources of finance. The Atlantic Bridge II Fund, which is being supported under Enterprise Ireland’s Seed and Venture Capital Programme 2007-2012, will focus on high-tech firms across Ireland and Europe with strong international growth prospects.

THE Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD, today begins a series of top-level meetings with leading US multinational firms in an effort to draw fresh investments to Ireland.

Minister O’Keeffe is visiting 13 firms in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts in the US east coast region. The firms span a range of sectors including life sciences, information communications technology and financial services. Minister O’Keeffe is accompanied by the chief executive of IDA Ireland, Barry O’Leary.

100 new jobs for Cork

eli+lillyTHE Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe today announced that one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical firms is to create 100 new finance jobs in Cork over the next 12 months.

Eli Lilly, which has been manufacturing pharmaceutical products in Kinsale since 1981, is to begin recruiting immediately for the new positions in a European financial services centre in Cork city. Most of the new jobs will be filled by next spring.

The new European financial services centre will support Eli Lilly’s European operations, providing general accounting, order-to-cash and purchase-to-pay activities.

Online encyclopaedias for 4,000 schools

Encyclopaedia_Britannica_15_with_2002THE country’s 4,000 schools are to get free access to online versions of the popular Encyclopaedia Britannica and World Book as part of an e-learning initiative announced today by the Minister for Education, Batt O’Keeffe.

The online encyclopaedias use text, video clips, three-dimensional simulations, research aids and other new media in presenting information to students.

Announcing the online move, Minister O’Keeffe said, “Making these encyclopaedias available online to schools free of charge demonstrates our commitment to providing digital reference content to teachers and students in a way that encourages learning through technology.

€250,000 for Coppeen National School

THE Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, has announced €250,000 for a major extension project in Coppeen National School, Enniskeane, Co Cork.

The grant will be used to build two extra classroom, convert two of the existing smaller classrooms into one larger classroom, and provide ancillary accommodation.

On a visit to the school, Minister O’Keeffe said it had strong educational record and deep roots in the community.
