BANDON councillor Gearóid Buckley has welcomed the news that Cork County Council will make Harte’s Car Park available free of charge from Saturday 26th November until Christmas Eve.
The announcement by Town Manager, Kevin O’Neill, comes just days after County Manager Martin Riordan made €5,000 available to erect the Christmas lights in Bandon.
BANDON Labour councillor Gearóid Buckley says residents face another “winter of worry” as the town council is denied funding for summer dredging on the Bandon River.
He made the comments following the rejection of Cork County Council’s application to the OPW for funding to carry out remedial works on the Bandon River.

LIKELY presidential candidate Michael D Higgins will visit Bandon to celebrate International Workers Day (May Day) on April 30th.
“An Evening with Michael D” will take place in the Munster Arms from 8pm.
Leo McMahon (Southern Star) will interview Mr Higgins on all parts of his political career, including his time as a government minister, his family and life after the Dáil. The evening is free and is open to everyone.
AT Tuesday night’s meeting of Bandon Town Council, Labour Party Councillor, Gearóid Buckley proposed a motion calling for the implementation of a nationwide State guaranteed insurance scheme to cover the property of those affected by flooding.
Cllr Buckley expressed disappointment that the motion was not adopted in full but said he was happy that the overall principal of the motion was accepted by all members.
A PRESENTATION of the early flood warning system for Bandon was made to members of Bandon Town Council at it’s meeting last night. This system will allow residents and traders to register for text alerts when the water is particularly high and to track water levels online.
According to Labour councillor Gearoid Buckley, “When the water reaches dangerous levels a text message will be sent to anyone who registers with www.bandonfloodwarning.ie. There will be no cost involved in registering for this service. Alerts will be issued under three categories – Yellow, Orange and Red.
BANDON Town Council is doing all it can to obtain funding for flood defences according to Labour member Gearoid Buckley.
“As a Town Councillor in Bandon, I am fully aware of the serious risk flooding poses to our town. If it occurs again this winter it will have a detrimental effect on the economic life of the town.
FOLLOWING the news that €13 million has been allocated to Ireland under the EU Solidarity Fund, Labour Party Councillor Gearóid Buckley has called on the Minister for Finance to use this money to fast-track flood prevention measures.
Cllr Buckley said, “The Minister has said that the money will be used to re-coup monies spent by the Government on the emergency response during the flooding crisis last winter. This money needs to be spent in the heart of communities to ensure that the events of last November are not repeated.
