ONE-year tenancies are part of  the solution to anti-social behaviour according to Labour TD Ciarán Lynch.

Anti-social behaviour should lead to reduced rent allowance

FINE Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has said that rent allowance should be reduced or withdrawn where anti-social behaviour occurs.  Deputy Buttimer raised the issue of anti-social behaviour in rented properties with the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, in the Dáil during topical debates.

Stronger powers needed to tackle anti-social tenants

SINN Féin Councillor Chris O’Leary has called for the local authority to be given stronger powers to tackle anti-social tenants.

Reacting to the publication of the council’s new strategy for dealing with anti-social behaviour last night, Cllr O’Leary stated, “This is a positive document with a lot of good ideas. It lays out clearly how the council plans to deal with complaints of anti-social behaviour, including against council tenants. The kind of clear and transparent procedure laid out in this document is badly needed.

Justice Minister asked to attend Cork Joint Policing Committee

MINISTER for Justice, Dermot Ahern is to be invited to attend a meeting of Cork City Council’s Joint Policing Committee as part of plan to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour in the city.

Chair of the committee, Fine Gael councillor Patricia Gosch will write to the minister this week inviting him to attend in an effort to provide feedback to the Department of Justice on how current legislation sometimes fails to deliver effective results at a local level.

Cork councillor wants national curfew

A CORK councillor is calling for a curfew to be imposed on all under-17s after 10pm to combat anti-social behaviour.

Fianna Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn who is the son of outspoken TD Noel O’Flynn said that he could not see why “any child under 17 would have any reason to be outside their home, or estate wandering the streets” after10pm.

FIANNA Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has lashed out at Cork City Council over the recent lane closure between Spriggs Road and Temple Acre Avenue.

In what he calls “a bizarre” and “grotesque bumble” by Cork City Council, Cllr O’Flynn has called on council officials to admit, “That what they have done with this laneway closure is not a solution to a problem but rather an escalation of anti-Social behaviour in the area.”

Housing Bill wont tackle anti-social behaviour

THE Miscellaneous Housing Bill which was discussed in Dáil Committee this week does not go far enough to tackle the scourge of anti-social behaviour according to Labour TD Ciarán Lynch.

“There was a lot of expectation that the Bill would at long last contain some strong measures to allow local authorities to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour.

“However when put under examination, any hope one may have had that this long-awaited Bill would act as a remedy to anti-social behaviour can only be met with disappointment,” said Deputy Lynch.

Housing policy leaves residents “living in fear”

INDEPENDENT city councillor Chris O’Leary has claimed that “Residents are living in fear because of poor housing allocation policy, which led to two housing estates being under siege for more than five days by rival groups, in stand off at times with Gardaí holding a peace line.”

Anti-social behaviour campaigner Cllr O’Leary said he was, “Horrified to see local estates under siege because of a small minority of individuals who were allowed to hold the rest of the residents to ransom”.

Cllr O’Leary added, “ Surely decent residents deserve better treatment than this from their landlords.

“I am now calling for an Independent enquiry into Cork City Council’s housing allocations and letting policy.
