FIANNA Fáil TD Billy Kelleher has called on Justice Minister Alan Shatter to regulate the ‘cash-for-gold’ sector amid a worrying increase in robberies where gold jewellery appears to be the main target.

Deputy Kelleher said: “The Minister for Justice, despite his bullish rhetoric, from the opposition benches, has proved to be very soft on crime.  In one area of my own constituency there has been a spate of break-ins.  I have been made aware of cases where older people who were at mass in broad daylight had their homes broken into and valuables, particularly gold jewellery is being targeted.”

More Cork garda stations facing closure under second round of cuts

CORK North West Fianna Fáil TD Michael Moynihan has said more garda stations across the county are facing closure in the next few months after the Justice Minister Alan Shatter launched a fresh attack on rural garda stations.

Minister Shatter has confirmed that his decision to close six garda stations in West Cork, including Knocknagree, along with nearly 40 others across the country, is just the beginning of a sustained attack on community policing.

Deputy Moynihan has called on Minister Shatter to immediately clarify how many stations he intends to shut down in Cork this year and the savings he has identified from these closures. [Read more...]

WELCOMING the announcement by the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, that a strategy to deal with accommodation in Cork prison and the management of prisoners who would be better served being reintegrated back into society, Fine Gael Cork Senator, Colm Burke, said the approach being adopted by the Minister is the right one.

Two pronged approach to Cork Prison will improve conditions and prospects for prisoners

FINE Gael Deputy for Cork North West, Áine Collins, has welcomed the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter’s approach to dealing with the issues facing Cork prison, saying the implementation of the strategy ‘Unlocking Community Alternatives – a Cork Approach’ will address overcrowding at the prison while identifying alternatives to custody for suitable prisoners.

“The two pronged approach being adopted by the Minister in relation to Cork Prison will seek to deal with the inadequate accommodation and the lack of in-cell sanitation at the facility, while at the same time seeking to reduce the number of inmates by identifying suitable , risk-assessed inmates for community based programmes.

New Cork prison would eliminate long-standing problems and create jobs

FINE Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed comments from the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, that he was considering the construction of a new prison for Cork on the car park site adjacent to the existing facility.

“This is a positive announcement by the Minister.  For many years Cork Prison has suffered from problems of overcrowding and the lack of in-cell sanitation.  The Minister, having seen these problems first hand, is now taking steps to eliminate the difficulties and improve the criminal justice infrastructure in Cork.

CORK South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, TD, that the government has given approval to appoint senior Gardaí.

We now have a series of solutions, which will form a key part of the Government’s strategy for dealing with mortgage arrears. Why has sensitive national archive on peace process been sent to USA?

FIANNA Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has described the decision to export highly sensitive documents relating to the Irish Peace Process as ill considered and potentially damaging to the interests of peace and reconciliation.

He also questioned the effects of the move on future Irish historical research.

The Fianna Fáil leader has called on the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter TD to clarify why exactly he agreed to donate documents from the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD), the body appointed in 1997 to oversee the process of putting ‘beyond use’ weapons used in the Northern Ireland conflict, to Boston College.
