FINE Gael Cork North Central Senator Colm Burke, has today (Wednesday) said that there has been huge demand from clubs across Cork for the latest round of the Sports Capital Programme. A total of 217 applications have been received from Cork clubs, seeking more than €21,083,163 in funding.
The projected cost of all of the projects in Cork alone amounts €33,848,308.
Senator Burke added that decisions are not expected to be announced until later in the year.
“It’s not surprising that there has been such a high demand for the Sports Capital Programme, which gives great support to clubs and sporting organisations around the country. It has proved an essential element in assisting clubs to upgrade and build new facilities.
“Unfortunately, due to the pressure on our public finances, it won’t be possible to fulfil all of the applications. There were more than 2,100 applications received nationwide, seeking €224 million. But just €30 million is available.
“All of the applications are now being processed, and groups in Cork should begin to receive acknowledgements shortly. Due to the high level of interest it’s expected to be the late autumn or early winter before the successful applicants are known.
“While there will be some disappointments, I am sure that many clubs across Cork will benefit from funding. Applicants can expect to hear from the Department of when final allocations are being made.”
