FINE Gael Cork North Central Senator, Colm Burke, today (Friday) called on insurance companies to make an initial payment of €3,000 to their policy holders whose homes and businesses have been affected by flooding this week.
“In extreme instances of flooding, such as that which occurred in Douglas, Glanmire, Blackpool, Ballyvolane and Clonakilty this week, a certain level of damage is easily assessable and €3,000 is a conservative estimate of the minimum amount of damage which could have occurred to individual properties.
“I believe that once insurance companies receive a notice of claim from a property owner, this initial payment should be immediately made, with the full assessment of the claim then being made. This payment would help to relieve, in a small way, the financial pressure which the affected property and business owners are now faced with.
“Many households and businesses are running on tight budgets with little room for manoeuvre. The overnight flooding which occurred is now placing further pressure on those affected. Immediate action is required and insurance companies should be proactive in helping those who have suffered so badly as a result of recent flooding.”
