INDEPENDENT candidate in the Macroom electoral Area, Jerry O’Sullivan is calling for County Cork to receive its proportionate level of national investment funding.
“Cork City and County has over half a million people (14% of the population of the Republic of Ireland) and produces over one-third (34%) of all goods and services (GDP) produced in this nation. We in Cork are one-third of the Irish Economy,” said Mr O’Sullivan.
“We in County Cork collect almost €700 Million in vehicle-related taxes alone, not to mention VAT and other taxes. Handing these monies over to Dublin to build the Spire, Port Tunnel, Luas, Dart and the proposed Metro North, while we in County Cork receive less than 1% of the proposed funding nationally is unjust and wrong.
“Under Fianna Fáil, for every euro of national funding each resident of Dublin can expect to receive a resident of County Cork can expect to receive less than 1 cent. If Fine Gael were in power all our money would shift to Sligo or wherever which would get perfect roads paid for by us in Cork.
He concluded, “Our current political representatives kowtow to their party bosses in Dublin when they are told there is nothing for us here in Mid-Cork. We need representatives who can forcefully and successfully make Cork’s case for our fair share”.
