FIANNA Fáil TD for Cork North West, Michael Moynihan has called on farmers and those in the agri-food sector to vote Yes in next month’s Stability Treaty referendum. The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture and Food, commented: “The agriculture sector in Ireland has benefited enormously from our membership of the EU.  It is vital that Ireland remains central to the EU in order to continue to avail of the many advantages the agricultural sector has received in the past and will continue to receive in the future.

“At a basic level there is ready made market in Europe for our world class product whether it is meat, milk or poultry products.  The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), is currently being renegotiated and is at a crucial stage. The next 12 months will be vitally important in its negotiation and Ireland needs to have a strong voice at the political table.

“Ireland has received a lot more than it has put into the CAP and farmers throughout the country have benefited fully from our close relationship with Europe. Access to the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) is vital to the securing the economic future of Ireland. With the export market and particularly the agri-food sector driving recovery in Ireland, it is imperative the EU remains a welcome market. Ireland’s export market is particularly buoyant and Yes vote in the stability treaty will strengthen Ireland’s position with the EU.”
