Water metering is a trojan horse claims councillor

WORKERS’ Party Councillor Ted Tynan has said that the government’s decision to establish the new Irish Water company as a subsidiary of Bord Gáis is merely a stunt and that both companies will be sold off in a few years time with massive job losses, poorer quality water and higher prices for gas and water.

Cllr. Tynan said that yesterday’s (Tuesday) announcement was made simply to please the Troika who are currently in Dublin to inspect the books and ensure that the government is doing as it is told in the enforcement of austerity.

The Workers Party councillor rubbished the coalition’s claim that the new water company would create 2,000 jobs and said that the real cost of privatisation and metering would be job losses in Cork City and County Council and in every other local authority in the state.

Cllr. Tynan said that the Household Charge campaign had shown that people will no longer roll over to government threats and propaganda. Unlike in the past, there is now a formidable force in place that will meet the government head-on when meter installation begins.   Water metering is simply a Trojan Horse for privatisation and a foot in the door to higher prices for ordinary householders who are already at breaking point.
