THE re-establishment of the Cork City Council Sports Committee will give Cork clubs an added advantage over clubs outside of the county in terms of development of their facilities and playing fields.
The Cork City Council Sports Committee now under the chair of Labour councillor Ger Gibbons will run for the next three years and have a fund of 750,000 to distribute to clubs in Cork city.
Speaking following the committee’s first meeting on Monday night councillor Ger Gibbons was fulsome in his praise for City manager Tim Lucey.
“Since my election in 2009 I have work in conjunction with the other members of Cork City Council to find funding and re-establish the sports committee. City Manager Tim Lucey has been very supportive of our efforts and we are very pleased to announce a figure of €750,000 to be set aside for sport in the City,” Ger Gibbons said
Councillor Gibbons, also a member of Cork Sports Partnership believes both the City grants programme along with the Partnerships funding of programmes gives Cork Sports Club a massive advance over Clubs in other County’s to develop on and off the playing fields.
The Committee met for it first time on Monday April 2nd and began the progress of listing the criteria for application.
“We hope to have application forms available in the next few weeks and I would strongly suggest Clubs to apply. We hope to give small grants of €5000 and under for smaller projects and large grants of €5000 and over for larger projects” states Gibbons.
“In these times when there is so much negativity about, sporting success can lift peoples spirits. The work of the Sports Committee will be of benefit to the whole community” said Cllr Gibbons.
