SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry has said that leaks given to newspapers over the weekend by National Roads Authority sources are aimed at softening up public opinion for the tolling of the Jack Lynch Tunnel within two years.
“Work on the grade separation of the N25 Southern Ring Road , N71 Bandon Road and Sarsfield Road roundabouts begins on July 28th and is not due for completion until July 2013.
An ‘NRA source’ told the Sunday Business Post that tolling of the tunnel would probably require barriers and said that this would be disruptive to traffic flow, adding, ‘There has to be a free flow of traffic, and all of the flyovers need to be in place before barriers could be put in’.
“The NRA drew up a list of revenue raising measures for the government last October and these included proposals for tolling both the Jack Lynch Tunnel and the South Ring Road.
“Any attempt to toll the Jack Lynch Tunnel or the South Ring Road will be met with furious opposition in Cork.
“The Government are planning a household tax, a tax on the family home and a water tax.
“People are getting close to breaking point, you can only tighten your belt so far. This will become a major issue in Cork city and surrounding areas if the Government decide to go down this road,” he said.
