Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer has tonight paid tribute to Cork North Central Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen who has announced his retirement from politics.
“The news of Bernard’s retirement has come as a shock. Over the years Bernard has proved himself to be a champion of the people. He has been never afraid of taking on vested interest. As a public representative he always stood up for people, standing up for their rights and as a Government Minister this was very evident.
“I would like to thank him for his friendship, encouragement and his wise counsel over the years. As a Minister, Lord Mayor, Member of the old Southern Health Board and as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee he has been an exceptional, tireless worker and a great ambassador for Cork.
“His time as Minister for Sport was marked by vision, and investment in sport and youth affairs. One has to look at the creation of the Sports council and the investment in sport in his time as a Minister. Today across Ireland and Cork sporting facilities stand as one of his legacies in Government.
“I would like to extend my best wishes to Bernard Marie and the girls. I hope that he will continue to play a role in some capacity on behalf of Cork,” he said.
