THE Campaign for a Real Public Health Service will organise a protest rally this Thursday, June 24 at 1.30pm at the gates of St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital, Gurranabraher in opposition to the HSE’s plans to shut the hospital early next year.
The Campaign believes that the HSE’s plans to shut the hospital and transfer orthopaedic services to the South Infirmary are not in the best interests of patients because:
* There are more orthopaedic beds at St Mary’s than there will be at the South Infirmary
* There is less risk of cross-infection at St Mary’s than there will be at the South Infirmary
* Car parking will represent a major problem for orthopaedic patients at the South Infirmary.
The closure of St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital will represent the first closure of a major public hospital in Cork city since the closure of the North Infirmary in the late 1980s.
More than 200 workers, patients, expatients and supporters of the hospital protested at the hospital gates on May 24 and Thursday’s protest is expected to be bigger again.
