Are Euro candidates smarter than a 10 year old?

EUROPEAN parliament candidates failed to impress Newstalk’s judges this week when they battled it out to compete in a European themed quiz aimed at children.
Seven of the Ireland South candidates accepted the invitation to compete in the quiz on The Right Hook show, however not one candidate was able to correctly answer all of the questions put to them despite the fact these questions were sourced from a mix of children’s quizzes on the European Parliament’s website. In fact, one Fianna Fail candidate didn’t know who the Minister for European Affairs is and not one of Ireland South’s sitting MEPs know how many countries use the Euro?
Top of the class were outgoing MEPs Kathy Sinnott (Ind) and Brian Crowley (FF) with nine out of 10. At the other end were Ned O’Keeffe (FF) and Toireasa Ferris (SF) with three and four out of 10 respectively. Sean Kelly (FG) scored one out of the three questions he answered before withdrawing and saying the quiz was an unfair way of judging MEP candidates. Alan Kelly (Lab) and Colm Burke (FG) both scored six out of 10.
Among the most notable misses was Fianna Fail’s Ned O’Keeffe incorrectly answering that his party colleague, Peter Power, rather than, Dick Roche, was the Minister for State with responsibility for European Affairs.
Despite teaching European law Sinn Fein’s Toireasa Ferris didn’t know that Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007. Councillor Ferris also answered that Minister Micheal Martin was the Minister for European Affairs.
