069Kinsale3CORK-based Labour Party senator Michael McCarthy has said that the Labour Party is holding its second Environment NGO Forum in Kinsale, home of the Transition Town Movement, to add their support to the movement.

“To tackle the environmental challenges ahead including climate change and peak oil, Labour believes community initiatives such as the transition town movement in Kinsale can play a key role.

“The transition town movement is a grassroots voluntary community initiative working to make the transition from a dependency on fossil fuel to a low carbon future.

“This is a local initiative to encourage people to consider issues like transport, energy, food production, education and health and find practical ways that ensure sustainability in all aspects of the way we live as a community.

“The transition movement brings together themes of self-reliance and sustainability and joins and works with other community initiatives such as Tidy Towns and Fair Trade towns and cities.

“Founded in Kinsale in 2005, the transition town concept has now travelled throughout the Ireland and the UK. I commend the people of Kinsale for taking this initiative,” he said.
