FIANNA Fáil councillor Kenneth O’Flynn has welcomed the decision by Cork City Council to place ornamental plaques in Blackpool to indicate the old laneways of the area.
“This work has taken some time to finalise but I am delighted that it will begin in 2010,” he said.
The project will see 20 plaques placed around Blackpool with the names of the historic laneways inscribed on them.
“I am sure most people have seen a similar system in operation on North Main Street and I am delighted that City Council is extending the idea to the historic village of Blackpool.
“I think that this kind of initiative really brings our past alive and makes people interested in the past.”
The project will also see a map installed at the plaza which will outline points of historical interest in the Blackpool area and will help in the furthering of Blackpool as an attractive destination for walking tours and other groups interested in Cork history.
